What is Legal Operations? Specific definitions and methodology vary, but legal operations is generally about efficiency and effectiveness: how can a legal team best deploy its lawyers expertise and legal resources to advance the client’s goals, safeguard them from risk and protect the bottom line in a changing business environment?
What can Legal Operations do for private practice lawyers or corporate legal departments? Legal operations can help lawyers control costs, improve their performance and communication with their clients. While every legal team is different (and some budgets and regulatory pressures are bigger than others), every organization can see real value from implementing legal operations initiatives and exploring technology solutions that fit their corporate culture and existing IT infrastructure.
ADDITIONAL INSPIRATION +++
Curious to approach legal operations step by step? Our practical advice on planning and budgeting for legal teams may be a great place to get started. Legal reporting is also another key aspect of legal operations initiatives because stakeholder groups have different responsibilities, different preferences and reporting needs to be tailored to their specific context.
Optimizing legal operations with technology often leads to a more data-driven approach to legal work streams. We previously shared our insights on how data analytics is relevant for lawyers. We had also looked at global studies about data-driven legal departments in corporations. Further legal operations resources and case studies are also available HERE.
